Astronomical Events-December 2021

2 December

Pheonicid meteor shower will be active from 28th November to 9th December. It will produce at its peak rate of meteors on around 2nd December. The Pheonicid meteor shower radiant point lies in the constellation of Phoenix. From Mumbai, the shower will be active after the sunset until 1:19 Am, when its radiant point sets below your western horizon. The shower is expected to produce its best display on around 9:00 PM, when its radiant point is highest in the sky.

6 December

ᴪ-Cassiopeid meteor shower

The December ᴪ-Cassiopeid meteor shower will be active from1 December to 8 December, producing its peak rate of meteors around 6th December. The shower’s radiant point lies in the constellation Andromeda. From Mumbai, the shower is visible after the sunset until 4:55 AM, after that its radiant point sets below the western horizon. Somewhere at 9:00 PM, shower is expected to produce its best display, because at this point its radiant point is highest in the sky.

7 December

Conjunction of moon and venus

The Moon and Venus will share same right ascension in the night sky. The moon passing 1 Degrees 52 Minutes to the south of Venus. The moon will be at magnitude of -10.4 and Venus at magnitude of -4.7. The both the objects will visible in constellation Sagittarius. From Mumbai, the conjunction will be visible from 6:15 PM, 29 Degrees above south-western horizon. At same time, both the objects will make closest approach to each other.

Puppid-Velid meteor shower

The Puppid-velid meteor shower will be active from 1st December to 15th December, producing its peak rate of meteors on 7th December. The showers radiant point lies in the constellation Vela. From Mumbai, the shower will be visible from around 1:07 AM, when its radiant point rises above eastern horizon. The shower will remain visible until 6:35 AM. On around 4:00 AM, the shower’s radiant point will reach highest in the sky, therefore shower is likely to produce best display of meteors around this time. During its peak activity, the shower is expected to produce 10 meteors per hour. 

Venus at greatest brightness

Venus will reach its greatest brightness in the night sky. It will shine with magnitude of -4.7.

8 December

Conjunction of moon and saturn

The Moon and Saturn will share same right ascension. The Moon passing 4 Degrees 11 Minutes to the south of Saturn. The conjunction will visible in the constellation Capricornus. The Moon will be at magnitude of -11.0 and Saturn will be at magnitude of 0.5. At same time, both objects also make closest approach to each other. From Mumbai, the conjunction will visible from 6:16 PM, 41 Degrees above south western horizon.

9 December

Monocerotid meteor shower

The Monocerotid meteor shower will be active from 5th December to 20th December. It will produce its peak rate of meteors on 9 December. The radiant point of meteor shower lies in the constellation Monoceros. During its peak rate, shower is expected to produce 2 meteors per hour. From Mumbai, the shower is visible from 7:55 PM. It will remain visible until dawn breaks around 6:36 AM. The Monocerotid meteor shower expected to produce its best display around 2:00 AM, when its radiant point reaches highest in the sky.

Conjunction of moon and jupiter

The Moon and Jupiter will share same right ascension in the night sky. Moon passes 4 Degrees 28 minutes to the south of Jupiter. At same time, they will make closest approach to each other. The moon will be at magnitude of -11.5 and Jupiter will be at magnitude of -2.3. This conjunction is visible in the constellation Capricornus. From Mumbai, the conjunction will visible around 6:16 PM, 54 Degrees above south western horizon.

12 December

σ- Hybrid meteor shower

σ- Hybrid meteor shower will be active from 3rd December to 15th December. It will produce its peak rates around 12th December. The radiant point lies in the constellation Hydra. During its peak shower is expected to produce 3 meteors per hour. From Mumbai, the shower will visible from 9:39 PM. The shower will be visible until dawn breaks down at 6:39 AM. The shower is expected to produce its peak around 4:00 AM, when its radiant point is highest in the sky.

13 December

Conjunction of venus and pluto

Venus and Pluto will share same right ascension. The Venus passing 0 Degrees 20 Minutes to the north of Pluto. The conjunction will take place in constellation Sagittarius. The Venus will be at magnitude of -4.7 and Pluto will be at magnitude of 15.1. From Mumbai, the conjunction will become visible around 6:20 PM, 26 Degrees above south-western horizon.

14 December

Geminid meteor shower

The meteor shower will be active from 4th December to 17th December. The shower will produce at its peak rate around 14th December. The radiant point of shower lies in the constellation Gemini. At its peak, the shower is expected to produce 120 meteors per hour. From Mumbai, the shower is visible around 2:41 AM. It will remain visible until dawn breaks around 6:41 AM. The shower is expected to produce best display of meteors around 3:00 AM. At this time, the radiant point of meteor shower is highest in the sky. 

16 December

Comae Berenicid meteor shower

Comae Berenicid meteor shower will be active from 12th December to 23rd December. On 16th December it will produce its peak rate of meteors. The radiant point of shower lies in the constellation Leo. During its peak, shower will produce 3 meteors per hour. From Mumbai, the meteor shower will be visible from 00:12 AM until dawn breaks at around 6:38 AM.

19 December

Leonis Minorid meteor shower

The December Leonis Minorid meteor shower will be active from 5th December to 4th February. The radiant point of meteor shower lies in the constellation Leo. The shower is expected to produce 5 meteor per hour during its peak rate. From Mumbai, the shower is visible from around 10:43 PM and it will remain visible until dawn breaks around 6:41 AM.

21 December

December Solstice

In Northern hemisphere, 21st December will be the shortest day of 2021. Whereas, in southern hemisphere, 21st December will be the longest day of 2021. This day is counted by astronomers to be the first day of winter in the northern hemisphere.  This is the day when sun’s annual journey through the constellation of the zodiac reaches its southerly point in the sky, in the constellation of Capricornus at a declination of 23.5 Degrees S.

22 December

Ursid meteor shower

The Ursid meteor shower will be active from 17th December to 26th December. It will produce at its peak rate on 22nd December. The radiant point of shower lies in the constellation Ursa Minor. During its peak, shower is expected to produce 10 meteors per hour. From Mumbai, the shower is visible during whole night. This is because of showers radiant point is circumpolar, it will always remain above the horizon.

29 December

Conjunction of venus and mercury

Both the planets will share same right ascension. The Venus passing 4 Degrees 13 Minutes to the north of Mercury. The Venus will be at mag of -4.4 and Mercury at mag of -0.7. The conjunction will be visible in the constellation Sagittarius. From Mumbai, the conjunction is visible around 6:26 PM, 12 Degrees above south western horizon.
